Ways to Break into the Tech Industry

 22nd Mar 2019

When planning a career change, breaking into any industry can be a challenge. It can often include forking out on university courses and training programmes just to show potential employers you’ve got a few qualifications.

But actually, for those looking to break into the tech industry, there are plenty of resources available that will allow you to build your portfolio independently. Not only will this highlight your determination and dedication to the tech industry but boast unique skills that often don’t take a whole lot of time to gain (leaving room to do more!).

Here are a few of the resources available to anyone hoping to build their portfolio and break into the tech industry.

Develop Independent Knowledge

The tech companies we work with love to see candidates who’ve done their homework. If you can educate yourself through books and online literature, you’ll be able to show potential employers your vast independent knowledge of the field of study you’re looking to smash through.

In an article for 24 Ways, Dean Hume recommends Clean Code by Robert C. Martin to junior developers hoping to improve their knowledge of bad code and learn techniques to quell these issues.

Free Online Courses

freeCodeCamp is an incredible resource that provides coding lessons for those looking to build a rich portfolio of tech skills. Whether you’re a beginner or well-versed in code, there are thousands of training sessions available to improve your skills.

As a non-profit funded by thousands of donations, freeCodeCamp is entirely 100% free!

MOOCs!

A MOOC, otherwise known as a Massive Open Online Course, is a great way to improve your skills from the comfort of your own home (or, more likely, the sofa!).

Incredible companies offering a range of MOOCs include edX and more. Their tech courses are taught by professors from great universities including Harvard, Berkely and MIT!

On the Lookout

As a recent graduate or someone who is on the lookout for a way into tech, it’s always best to stay alert to opportunities that can increase your skillset. It looks great on a CV and can open incredible doorways.

At Graft, we can help people find routes to their dream careers. If you’re looking for ways to improve your skillset and break into the tech industry, get in touch with our team.
